Food, Fonts and Facebook

Breaking the tradition of posting on technical stuff, this post is a mix of both technical and non-technical .
I went home for a good 10 days for diwali. Had a lot of fun. Home food was, as usual, awesome. Made me reflect on how we only realize the importance of somethings in their absence. Food, punjabi music , the language, the people etc. On my way back, i increased my contempt and hatred for Delhi. Delhi, it sucks.
Now, fonts. I found some really cool fonts. some of them are good with browsers and other’s with editors like vim and emacs.
The first one is from microsoft. Microsoft consolas is a beautiful mono spaced font, and its free. You can download it here. The thing with this font is that although you can use it anywhere, word, firefox, etc. its basically for programming environments, namely visual studio. So the stupid installer will make you install dotnet framework at the very least. anyways its your call, the font is quite nice.
The next font is Driod Sans Mono. Read more about this font here. This font is great with emacs and vim. Highly readable and very clean.
District Thin looks really nice with browsers. You can get this one here. bash.org became so much easier to read after this font.
The last two fonts are TrueType fonts and you need to do a little bit of wrestling to get them to show up in xfontsel. Once they show up there, you can use them with any X11 application and place entries in .Xdefaults too.
I found this article very useful for installing truetype fonts. However, the following steps might be of help for FreeBsd 4.1 users. Copy the font in /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/<myfontdir> and run ttmkfdir -o fonts.dir. Now add /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/<myfontdir> to /etc/X11/fs/config.
After this rehash the font path by saying “xset fp rehash” and rebuild the font cache by saying “fc-cache”. Check the font.dir build in the previous step for the font string.
example: DroidSansMono.ttf -misc-Droid Sans Mono-medium-r-normal–0-0-0-0-m-0-iso8859-7
This line shows that DriodSansMono.ttf will be in the font factory “misc” with the name “Driod Sans Mono”. run xfontsel and locate this font. play around with the values till you get a font of your liking and use the font string 🙂

Facebook, i am hooked. I really like the applications and the photo management and the quizzes.
